Weds. was our appointment with the ped. rheumatologist in Gainesville. The drive up was ok, for those that don't know, Gainesville is about 2 hours from our home in Longwood. We arrived at Shands Medical Plaza at 1pm, an hour before our scheduled appointment. Check in was easy and painless, haha!, and we were put in a room quickly.
Dr. Modica came in and she asked for the story of how we ended up seeing her. So after that she started to examine Jackson. Jackson was diagnosed with JIA, and more specifically, polyarticular arthritis
Jackson was given an infusion of a combo of methotrexate and prednisone. We were also sent home with scripts for methotrexate, prednisone, naproxen [increase in dosage] and one more thing that I can not think of right off the top of my head. The methotrexate is done once a week by injection, 24 hours after that he has to take a "folic acid" pill. The naproxen is still done twice a day along with a zantac pill. The prednisone is taken in decreasing doses for 5 days at a time.
In three weeks we go back to Gainesville for a followup visit and another infusion. I was told to pack a bag because we may be admitted to Shands for 3 solid days of infusions.
If this seems like a lot of info to absorb, it is. We are taking it day by day. I was taught how to give injections and will be doing it for the first time next Weds.
